Control Freaks
James D. Brausch
I get threatening emails from morons all the time. Todays was from someone who demanded that I change the categories on my site. He has his own site, but he thinks he gets to control every other site in the world too... yeah... a control freak.
Of course, I dont even care about controlling the categories on my site. I use the Internet Business Box which automatically builds the category list using phrases that people enter into the search box or phrases that are commonly found in articles on this site. It is all automatic and I have no control over it nor do I have any desire to have any control over it.
There is a common prayer called the serenity prayer that goes like this...
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
When I learned that Solomon (arguably the richest man who has ever lived) attributed his great wealth to praying for wisdom, I decided to add that as a request in all of my daily prayers.
As the years went on, I think I have developed the wisdom to know the difference.
You can not change ANYTHING other than yourself. Accepting that does lead to more serenity, happiness, and success in lie.
You can change EVERYTHING about yourself. You may doubt that, but think it through. You might claim that you cant become the opposite gender, but of course... people do that every day. You might claim that you cant change your race and skin color, but some people claim that Michael Jackson did exactly that. And I see white people getting tans every day on the beach in my travels.
Here is the real trick though. It turns out that you actually can change anything you want outside of yourself. You cant change it directly. Being a control freak doesnt work. But you can change anything and everything in the entire universe.
The way you do that is by changing yourself. There are some interesting stories in the movie The Secret that prove that. My favorite two stories in that movie are the ones about the man who crashed his private plane and the gay commedian who changed everything around him. Check it out if you havent seen that movie.
So the next time you consider being a control freak, give some thought about the futility of trying to change anyone else. And then give some thought about how YOU can change that will result in the exact same outcome that you desire. Have the courage to change the things that you can (which is only YOU).
